The 2018 General Assembly passed legislation preventing school divisions from releasing student addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses without parent consent. However, we were recently informed that, despite these changes to state law the Every Student Succeeds Act continues to require secondary schools to provide, upon request made by a military recruiter or an institution of higher education, access to student names, addresses, and telephone numbers, unless the parent has opted out of the release of such information. School divisions are also required to notify parents of their option to opt-out in accordance with the law.
We regularly receive requests for this information from military recruiters and institutions of higher learning. If you do not want the school division to release your child’s address, telephone number, and email address to military recruiters and/or institutions of higher learning you can opt out by completing the opt-out registration form at the following link by Friday, November 16th. If you do not want to opt out you do not need to complete the form.
